Are these fixed output type DC to DC converter chips likely to be worth the additional expense for this particular application or not really?

It’s a whole leap ahead of MCA technology so I would advise mastering them first! Regulating the amount of current passing through the voltage divider and therefore not wasting as much power in heat dissipation by it?

Datashset I use this component in place dafasheet the above one it works exactly as the datasheet says it should. If you just used the output as it came from the pass transistor you would have a very coarse spikey voltage going from zero to the input voltage which is obviously not what you want.

In a switch mode regulator there’s a clue in the name! The voltage is entirely controlled by the divider as long as the switching circuit is still working within it’s capabilities. I have tried larger and smaller output capacitors.
