Mar 19, Andrea Kelly rated it liked it. The author drew a complete journey through Jim? My suspicion is that there’s more to it. The use of writing techniques was excellent, and the description of the war was excellent.

Unfortunately for him and meI happen to loathe this style of communication. It is superb in maloouf the strange ambivalence that Australians have about getting involved in other people’s wars on the maloif side of the world.
As far as I am concerned, your book or story is not a classic dvaid it survives a hundred years, and is still imprint, or, even better, manages to survive a dark age such as The Odyssey.

Malouf’s description of the all-consuming ‘system’ of war and the gruesome realities of living and dying at the front are gut-wrenching in their detail. He strikes up a friendship with Ashley Crowther, the young owner of this stretch of Australian farmland, and also with Imogen Harcourt, a middle-aged photographer with a similar passion.
The writer wants to portray the transformation of the characters, depending on peteg particular settings.
The relationship with land is explored; Jim feels he belongs to the land as much as Ashley, who owns it; Ashley accepts this with laconic good humour. Oct 05, Cazhezy rated it really liked it. Some reviewers do point out, though, that the writer tried to show in this novel  that English in the distant Australian land was experiencing a process of self-definition, and even redefinition of the self, in its individual and social aspects.
After reading it first time for a book analysis, I went back to it and re-read it to better understand and enjoy it. Inevitably, the two young men – sanctuary owner and employee – are drawn to the war, and into the mud and horror of the trenches of Armentieres. Didn’t quite capture the sheer rawness of the First World War, but a real interesting perspective through the eyes of Jim. But then we had to analyse this book for my english class this year, and I can now say with total honesty, that I still do not like it very much.
